Quality Assurance Manager

v      position Overview

Responsible for planning, managing and improving this Company’s overall Quality Program.  This includes: Establishing, training, and enforcing quality standards, monitoring daily performance, applying and monitoring performance standards, identifying and resolving problems related to quality from raw materials to finished products and ensuring that all the parameters are established within safe and efficient guidelines. Evaluate deviations, determine root causes, develop corrective actions and process improvements; train, and implement procedures that improve quality, safety, efficiencies, and KPI’s.

v      Essential Functions

Safety and Regulatory

1.      Enforce Company Safety Policies and actively participate in the Safety Committee Program, this includes assuring the following occur monthly: department QA safety meetings, corrective actions implemented from department safety observations, participation in monthly departmental safety audits, participation in Safety Committee Meetings and Safety Board; support the Human Resources department to maintain a healthy and safe work environment.

2.      Support the Human Resources efforts in the creation of a work environment where employees are treated fairly with respect and dignity.  Create a work culture that promotes open direct communication with employees avoiding the need for collective bargaining.

3.      Ensure that all direct reports are continually trained in equipment safety and safety guidelines, continually perform safety risk management assessments to eliminate and/or minimize safety hazards and continually look for methods to improve working conditions as they relate to ergonomics, air quality, work environment etc.

4.      Ensure compliance with all government regulations and permits and interact with government officials and other regulatory agencies in regards to safety and quality.

5.      Participate in, and lead where necessary, all Quality Regulatory Audits, including FDA, WSDA and other third party quality audits. Develop and implement corrective actions.

 

Quality Assurance

6.      Establish and maintain quality standards and develop new standards for continued quality improvement.

7.      Maintain, monitor and improve the sanitation program.

8.      Develop short and long range operating strategies for the department.

9.      Establish or assist in establishing raw material standards in conjunction with Purchaser an R&D by studying manufacturing and engineering requirements; conferring and negotiating with suppliers; devising test methods and procedures to assure quality.

10. Work with vendors to assure supplies meet QA specifications and corrective actions are developed and implemented when deviations occur.

11.  Establish and ensure all testing methods are followed and that continuous improvement is pursued.

12.  Develop and participate in the auditing process for the plant and co-pack facilities.

13.  Monitor daily production efficiencies and provide improvement/solutions to productivity roadblocks and continually improve downtime issues.

14.  Ensure all production meets quality standards.

15.  Work with Production and Warehousing to evaluate aging inventory, disposition and follow through with dispositions in a timely manner.

16.  Manage Sanitation Program and assure its effectiveness and efficiency to positively impact product quality.

17.  Assure a solid Quality Hold Program. Work with Production to establish disposition and completion of disposition of Hold product.

18.  Ensure the up-date, development and/or creation of manuals and/or standards in areas where needed.  Establish a review program to evaluate documentation and improve and/or create were necessary.

19.  Prepare product and process quality reports, analyze and summarize information and trends. Implement corrective actions and process improvements based on trends.

20. Analyze customer complaint trends relating to quality; provide feedback to Operations on trends and corrective actions to reduce complaints and recurring complaints.

21.  Develop, maintain, and improve forms, documents, SOP’s and reports.

22. Manage Waste Water Process and improvements.

23. Manage Water Treatment Process and improvements.

24. Manage Janitorial program.

25. Work with Manufacturing Planner, Warehouse, Maintenance, Logistics and Production Managers and supervisors to improve plant processes.

26. Support R&D with trials, specifications, procedures and launches.

27.  Work on projects and special assignments as assigned or initiated.

 

Productivity

28. Monitor KPI’s, trend monthly and ensure the department meets and/or exceeds goals.

29. Ensure effective preventive and corrective maintenance is conducted on all Operations’ equipment that affects quality.

30. Support Production, Maintenance and Warehousing where needed for process improvements and implementation.

 

Budget

31.  Develop departmental budget in conjunction with Director of Technical Services and work continually to improve and/or deliver to budget or better than budget.

32. Provide month end variance reports and explanations for actual expenses vs. budget.

33. Perform monthly analysis of variances for QA budget line items. Correlate analysis to variable budget based on cases produced and product mix.  Create action plans for cost control, cost avoidance, cost reduction and improve cost per case.

34. Take leadership in monitoring and analyzing shrinkage, yields, efficiencies and waste related to the department and continually reduce losses and implement corrective action.

35. Monitor, track and trend control and improve QA overtime. Assure staffing is efficient and effective based on cases produced.

 

Co-Packing and Process Improvement

36. Travel to co-packers to assure TalkingRain requirements, specifications and product quality are met.

37.  Establish relationships with co-packers.

38. Work with and support Co-pack Manager and Technical Services Supervisor.

39. Participate and contribute to co-pack program.

40. Assist co-pack operations’ departments in the development and improvement of manufacturing processes.

41.  Assist co-packer, where needed, in regards to Quality Holds of TR products and dispositions.

 

Leadership & Development

42. Create, implement and monitor a training and development system for direct personnel; Develop team with succession planning in mind.

43. Ensure all hourly personnel are cross-trained and on a path to certification.

44. Assure adequate staffing and employee turn-around in the QA department through motivation, scheduling, hiring, transferring, and terminating, as appropriate.

45. Contribute to hourly staff semi-annual performance reviews; assure timely and constructive.

46. Establish goals, identify priorities, provide direction, supply the necessary tools and resources, and recognize accomplishments in a timely manner.

47.  Create a collaborative work environment that encourages participation and debate.

48. Drive the pursuit of excellence by consistently and fairly holding all members accountable.

49. Work with all departments, (Accounting, Maintenance, Sales and Marketing, Human Resources, Customer Service, R&D) to maintain and improve efficient inter-departmental communication.

Reports To:  Director of Technical Services

Supervises:    One supervisor and indirectly all QA Personnel (technicians and janitors).

Works with:  All departments of Company and many departments at co-packers and vendors.

Travels:  Travel ~25% of time to establish relationships with co-packers and vendors to assure quality and continuous improvement.

v      Education and Experience

1.            Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science or related science degree required.

2.            At least five (5) years of QA experience in a food manufacturing environment in a supervisory role.
