Microbiology Manager

           

1.                  Position Purpose:

Responsible for operating and managing all aspects in the in-house Micro Lab. The microbiology manager must be able to communicate effectively with a cross functional team (production, sanitation, maintenance, quality assurance, and management), and provide direction to the team when needed. 

 

2.         Principal Accountabilities:

80       Conduct and supervise all in-house laboratory testing in compliance with BAM/AOAC or associated validated method. Insure that all customer microbiological specification standards are being met. Update and maintain all records and procedures. Establish and maintain the microbiology technician’s schedules. Coordinate testing and sampling with outside labs as necessary.

 

10       Update and maintain all aspects of training for microbiology technicians and designated quality assurance personnel.

 

 5        Participate in customer audits and presentations when necessary.

 

 5        Continue to review current testing methods and update as needed.            

 

 

3.         Challenges in the Position:

a.         Most difficult and complex problems and challenges:

·                     Addressing customer requests

·               Maintaining and establishing GLP’s.

·                     Proactive testing to isolate issue. 

·               Proper staffing to complete task or issue

a.      What kind of decisions can be made without requesting supervisory approval before taking action?

·         Placing product on Hold.

·         Department operations.

 

b.   What kinds of decisions require supervisory approval before taking action?

·         Budgeting.

·         Product rejection or recall.

 

5.         Position Qualifications:

·          Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or related field.

·         Complete knowledge of lab testing procedures and protocols.

·          General knowledge of production processes.

·          General knowledge of good food manufacturing policies.

 

6.         Certifications/Training Required:

·          Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or related field, or comparable experience.

·          Complete understanding of lab techniques and protocols.

·          Ability to read and understand technical data.

 

7.         Impact of Decisions and/or Actions:

 

a.      Organizational budget responsibilities: influence department budget of approximately :  $200,000.
